Choosing a College Major and Career

Choosing-a-College-Major-and-Career.jpg

Choosing a college major or career is overwhelming for teens sometimes. That’s because they think it’s a life-long decision that can’t be changed.

Not true!

How many times have YOU changed your career? I worked as an RN for many years, then I had kids. With the addition of kids, my career was stay-at-home mom. Later, that changed to homeschool teacher. After my children graduated, I became a small business owner.

How many careers have you had?

I think it’s a good idea to remind teenagers that for right now, when they are applying to college, they are simply giving their “best guess” for a college major. “Best Guess” is perfect for college admission forms.

A student has until the end of your sophomore year of college to decide on your major – and they have until the end of college to decide on your first career. And many adults have multiple careers over a lifetime, so even that is really just a first career.

No need to worry – even if you feel you’ve chosen the wrong path, life can be redirected.
