What about using Pass/Fail just for PE classes? I’d rather not figure PE in my student’s GPA–can that work?
In a public school, they provide grades for PE, and homeschool parents can do that too. Sometimes we feel awkward, giving grades that feel subjective, but often school teachers may feel the same way. You can give a grade based on participation and compliance and feel confident. If you give a pass/fail grade, “some” colleges “may” convert that into a grade, and that would mean a passing grade could be a 2.0 when they calculate your GPA. Other colleges may not include the PE grades in their calculations at all! So In my opinion, you are better off providing grades in case they DO use it, but don’t worry because many colleges will NOT use it. Still, I know some homeschool parents feel more comfortable not grading PE classes. However, ask yourself this: would the public school provide a grade? If yes, you can too!
Then, is it possible to give a grade but not include it in my highschool student’s GPA? How would I make that clear? (And if I did that, would it mean not including grades for any elective/non-academic types of courses?)

If you really feel that uncomfortable giving a grade for PE, then just don’t give a grade for PE – really! Don’t stress! You are a school, and you get to determine your own school policy. If you need more help, consider getting the “Making the Grades” class located here:

Thanks. I have the Comprehensive Record Solution, and have read you say that some colleges don’t include non-academic grades in the GPA–but I didn’t see anywhere in the CRS where you address how one would do that for a high school GPA (how would you give a grade but not include it in the GPA).

You can choose whether or not you want to add those grades or non-grades (as in a “pass/fail”) into the GPA. I would simply define what I did in the “Notes” section of my transcripts.
